OME, Newcastle University

The OME, built in 2021 for the Hub for Biotechnology in the Built Environment (HBBE), is an experimental biological house and living laboratory at the heart of Newcastle University’s campus.

The building itself will be used to test and showcase HBBE’s ground-breaking research, using experimental technologies to create prototypes for integrating biotechnology into homes.

The OME will be a focus for the activities of the HBBE, and the building provides a forum to showcase and educate both the academic community and the wider public through the events and activities hosted there.

The project was shortlisted for the 2022 Design Excellence Award for the Insider’s North East Property Awards 2022 and was a finalist for the 2022 Innovation Category for Constructing Excellence North East Awards (CENE).
