Sadler Brown were appointed as architects for the re-invigoration of the Tyne and Wear Metro System. The £600m project involved the refurbishment of the existing stations which were built since 1975.
The project consisted of upgrading all public and staff areas below the Grade I Listed Central Station, to create brighter, cleaner and more modern spaces for the 5.3m visitors a year.
Improvements have been made to disabled access, information displays, and waiting facilities. The internal finishes were also updated, getting a new-look colour scheme on new vitreous enamel panels, with feature colours to assist with passenger navigation.
New escalators were installed connecting to Newcastle mainline station to improve connectivity within the area.
