Last time they tasked the two Year 5 classes with designing their own Mayan temple, aligning with their current syllabus of the Maya civilisation. The workshop started by looking at existing Mayan temples and how they were designed and built, giving the pupils inspiration and ideas for their own. Then, once given a site, the children were helped to design their own version of a Mayan temple and shown techniques for drawing it using perspective and viewpoints such as plan, elevation and section.
A week later, Laura, Katherine and Hollie returned to the school to assist the children in building their temples out of various materials. The aim of the RIBA Ambassador programme is to provide architectural education within the early years of schooling, laying the foundations for future architects and inspiring the younger generations by showing them other career paths they may choose to take. Once again the workshop was a resounding success, with excellent engagement and interaction from the pupils.
Our team felt like they had really made an impact on the pupils, educating and inspiring them and opening their minds to life beyond the classroom.
