This week saw the grand opening of AKA’s Cats Protection Tyneside Adoption Centre in Felling, Gateshead. Hundreds of people turned up to see actor Stephen Tompkinson and X-Factor singer Sam Lavery perform the ribbon cutting ceremony.
Visitors shared the celebrations with staff and volunteers. They were able to see the centre’s new facilities which included new outdoor heated cat pens and shop as well as meeting all the friendly felines waiting for new homes.
Tompkinson said: “It’s been such a great day. The centre is fantastic and it’s been great to meet all the staff and take a peek behind the scenes.”
Lavery said: “It was such a brilliant day – I’m totally wowed by the new centre. The pens are amazing, the cats are super cute. There are so many unwanted cats and kittens in the North-East and it’s great to know that this new centre is helping to look after so many of them before they finally find a forever home.”
AKA were involved in this project which brought together various dispersed Cats Protection branches over the North East together to one central adoption centre. AKA worked with the Cats Protection to develop a standard design for the adoption centre which could then be rolled out to a number of sites nationally. The Felling site is the first to employ the new standard design and will act as a prototype for further development. The new building caters for the rehoming of cats and kittens, providing facilities for accomodation and care, training and education and meet and greet. The building will be used to address the local community, schools and youth groups on animal welfare.
