Architects-Group complete New Gateway for Newcastle’s Central Station

The New Gateway to Newcastle’s Central Station has officially opened.

Architects-Group, who have decades of experience in the rail and infrastructure sector, were part of the design team for this project, which was funded through the North East Combined Authority and managed by Newcastle City Council.

The project vision was to create better accessibility to the station and to ‘open up’ the transport hub to the west of the city, ahead of other major developments such as the adjacent £121m Forth Yards site. The New Gateway is part of a wider strategy and £4m redevelopment project with a vision is to create a welcoming arrival point that reflects the station’s growing role as a regional and national transport connector. Situated opposite the Centre for Life, the project represents the beginning of major redevelopment throughout the city and surrounding regions.

Improvements as part of the project include a living green wall, a refurbished waste management area, leading to improved safety and hygiene measures, as well as eight temperature controlled storage units for station retailers.

Architects-Group used both their infrastructural and historic expertise on this specialist and iconic project, working within the existing Listed fabric of the station and incorporating new and contemporary features, whilst respecting the heritage of the station.
